“Vertical Wilderness? exhibition

  • How do marmots spend the winter?
  • How big is an eagle’s nest?
  • And why are chamois so good at climbing?

The “Vertical Wilderness? exhibition forms the centrepiece of the Information Centre. It addresses questions surrounding the wild nature of the mountains and explains the fascinating adaption strategies used by the animals and plants to survive life in the high mountains.

This exhibition is designed to engage “all the senses?, allowing visitors to familiarise themselves with the subject matter by experiencing and feeling it first-hand.

Water, forest, Alpine pastures and rocky terrain – these four habitats are reflected in all areas of the Haus der Berge. Visitors also “walk through? these four habitats in the permanent exhibition. You undertake a journey from the bottom of Lake Königssee, through the valleys and Alpine pastures to the peak of a mountain, learning interesting facts about these different elements of the National Park landscape along the way.

During the “climb?, which takes approx. one to one and a half hours through the floors of the exhibition, the seasons change, and with them the appearance of the exhibition.

At the highest point, just like on a “real? mountain, visitors are rewarded with a breath-taking view: No two visits are alike!
