A Destination whatever the weather!

Welcome to »Haus der Berge«!

At the National Park Centre you may find important information and useful tips in preparation for - or as post-evaluation of - a visit to Germany's only Alpine National Park. Many attractions waiting to be discovered by you: The awarded »Vertical Wilderness« Exhibition, interactive information about the Park's protected area, a cinema with nature films, changing exhibitions in two levels and a Nature Conservation specific library!

Around the house you can explore the National Park’s four main habitats walking along the panoramic path: water, forest, mountain pasture and rocky terrain. And if the weather is fine there are fantastic views onto Mt Jenner, Mt Hochkalter and, of course, Mt Watzmann.

The Haus der Berge team is looking forward to your visit – whatever the weather!

National Park Centre

The National Park Centre »Haus der Berge« in Berchtesgaden is much more than just a museum: It unites an Information Centre, Educational Centre and an Outdoor Area to a harmonious triad.

Educational Centre and Natural Experience Area can be visited only by declared groups; Information Centre as well as the panoramic path are accessible to all visitors.

The »Haus der Berge« would like to give you five central ideas for your »trip«:

  • »Allow nature to be natural« – A rewarding plan
  • »Nature is in change« – At high speed at the high mountains
  • »People and biodiversity« – No contradiction within the National Park
  • »Survival at the mountains« – The origins of incredible adaptations
  • »Forward-looking actions« – Sustainability in harmony with nature

New exhibit at the National Park Center "Haus der Berge: "
Himalayan Habitat”

From July 3rd until September 30th 2019, the new exhibit, “Himalayan Habitat,” is available for viewing at the National Park Center "Haus der Berge."

High summits, rugged rocks and ever-present ice all make up the recognizable features of the highest mountain range on Earth: the Himalayas. The more colorful inhabitants love this rather dull habitat, even though it may demand quite a bit from them. Within the exhibit, Stefan und Alexander Gratzer, from the Salzkammergut Nature Museum, introduce the colorful fauna of this unique mountain region, as well the life and culture of the people that live there.

The exhibit at the Berchtesgaden National Park Center, Hanielstraße 7, is open for viewing daily between the hours of 9:00 and 17:00. Entrance to the exhibit is free of charge.

Foyer with National Park Exhibition

Foyer with National Park exhibition

In the generous entrance hall the experience begins. This small and free exhibition offers an overview about National Parks all over the world and joins in for the visit in the National Park Centre. This will explain the Berchtesgaden National Park, its importance within national and international networks and informs about the Biosphere Reserve »Berchtesgadener Land«.

In addition, here you will find useful information all around your unforgettable stay in Germany’s only Alpine National Park.

»Vertical Wilderness« Exhibition

Exhibition Vertical Wilderness

The »Vertikale Wildnis« exhibition (vertical wilderness) covers an area of about 1,000 m² in a single hall. Along an ascending pathway, visitors learn about the entire spectrum of life found in Berchtesgaden’s National Park.

The journey begins at the bottom of Lake Königssee and leads on through the natural habitats of water, forest, mountain pasture, rocky terrain and all the way up to the peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps. In the rocky terrain habitat one can experience the exhibition’s highlight: a nature film, lasting about 12 minutes, projected onto an 11m x 15m screen covering the inside surface of a large mountain panoramic window.

No one visit resembles another: varying room impressions constantly change according to the season and time of day, in addition to a variety of light and sound features, therefore making every stroll through the exhibition unique.
